Extension & Reconfiguration in West Sussex approved by SDNPA

Located in a small rural village in the South Downs National Park (SDNP) and an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this bungalow dates from the 1950s and had previously been extended with a flat-roofed rear extension and porch to the front. Now in need of repair and modernisation, our client’s brief was to create a 4-bedroom home with open-plan living and good connections to the rear, south-facing garden.

As is typical for bungalows, the option to double the size of the property by adding first floor accommodation was considered. A new build solution would also have been welcomed by the council. However, due to the position of the existing property on site, in close proximity to the western boundary, whilst leaving a generous space for expansion to the east, a more cost effective single storey extension was sought.

ArchitectureLIVE’s design meets the brief by adding a new, extensive side extension containing an open-plan kitchen/dining area with access to the back garden and the new entrance and living room. The existing layout will be completely reconfigured to deliver a master bedroom suite featuring patio doors that take in the views to the open countryside beyond. It will also provide a new utility and cloakroom and the remaining three double bedrooms and bathrooms. 

The re-design also includes holistic improvements to the overall appearance of the property consistent with its setting within the West Sussex countryside. A detached double garage completes the design. ArchitectureLIVE's proposal more than doubles the accommodation on site.
