This 1960 family home was first remodelled by AL 8 years ago and has since been very popular with our viewers. The stained dark Cedar cladding has triggered many positive comments and our design transformed an original 1960 property into a contemporary family home with a partially double height open-plan kitchen & dining area, a gallery study and a new master bedroom suite.

The building envelope improvements such as new polyester powder-coated double glazing throughout, cavity wall insulation/insulated cedar rainscreen cladding to all existing walls, loft insulation and a new Viessman heating system with integrated solar thermal hot water reduced the residents’ energy bills to a 1/3.

The final phase of our design - a near Passivhaus single storey annex is now due to take shape. The new foundations are already in place and we will follow the fast-track progress of the building envelope over the next couple of weeks. The superstructure will be made out of Kingspan Tek SIPs - Structural Insulated Panels - an off-site manufactured system which was chosen for its high thermal performance and air tightness and integral structural capabilities, which can easily accommodate open plan spans and vaulted ceilings.

Externally, the design will fall inline with the remodelled character of the house with dark Cedar cladding, aluminium glazing and a pitched green roof, overlooked by the existing master bedroom suite. Internally, materials were chosen for their natural characteristics and sustainably sourced. Ply sheeting in place of plasterboard and marmoleum flooring, a linseed based product currently 43% recycled, will provide a warm and calming interior.

With the SIPs construction to start on site next week, more will follow shortly.
