The brief, to extend and refurbish the property to meet the needs of modern living and to better respond to its context.

This property sits in the grounds of a stunning 19th-century Grade I listed mansion, surrounded by Grade II listed gardens and parkland. The mansion and its stable courtyard were converted to apartments and dwellings in the late 1990s by a developer.   

Our client’s property is a new-build, semi-detached, 3-bedroom property which, despite the modern age of the construction, was severely influenced by the Victorian setting including the use of single glazing and a traditional floor plan layout.

Due to the plot size and the strong character of the existing design, the majority of our interventions are limited to internal reconfiguration stripping the majority of the ground and first floor to deliver open-plan kitchen, dining and living, as well as a generous new master bedroom suite.

These layout changes also benefit from a small, two-storey extension, which blends in seamlessly with the existing external appearance by restricting the material pallet to the use of existing materials and details.
